Beach Bums Hang on to Early Lead for Win in Windy City

CRESTWOOD, IL- The Traverse City Beach Bums(19-23) had a 5-0 lead after five innings and were able to secure the win over the Windy City Thunderbolts(14-28) by a final score of 5-3.

After two scoreless innings, the Beach Bums got the offense rolling in the third. Orlando Rivera singled to right with one away then promptly stole second. Isaac Benard followed and lined a single to right-center field to score Rivera for a 1-0 lead. Luke Lowery led off the next inning by getting hit by a pitch for the tenth time this season. Two batters later, Max Dutto hit a two-run homer for the second straight game, his third of the season, for a 3-0 advantage.

Orlando Rivera led off the fifth with a walk then Will Kengor and Steve Lohr also followed with walks to load the bases. Luke Lowery singled in Rivera as the bases remained loaded, then Alec Olund drove in another run while reaching on a fielder's choice for a 5-0 lead. Windy City started to chip away in the sixth when Alex Johnson hit an RBI triple for the 'Bolts first run. They added two more in the seventh on a Jonathan McCray fielder's choice and an Omar Obregon RBI single, but that's as close as they would come.

Matt Murphy celebrated his 23rd birth with his first professional win, hurling six innings as he gave up one run on seven hits while striking out four. He's now 1-2. Eddie Avila suffered the loss to drop to 0-3. He went into the fifth, allowing all five Bums runs on five hits and three walks. John Michael Knighton pitched the ninth, getting a strike out, for his sixth save of the season.

On Saturday, the Beach Bums and the Windy City Thunderbolts continue this weekend's three game set with game two. Zac Westcott gets the start for Windy City while Justin Finan takes the hill for the Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm eastern time, and Tom Willms will have the call, starting with the Budweiser pregame show, at 6:45pm.
