NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters (18-22) trailed all night in the first game of the Jose Canseco weekend presented by the Town of Normal as they dropped 9-1 to the Florence Freedom (20-22) on Friday night at the Corn Crib.

Jose Canseco made his Frontier League debut in the bottom of the first as the Belter designated hitter. The former World Series champion lost the battle in a 2-2 count and struck out.

Normal platted their lone run of the game in the ninth. Justin Fletcher reached on an error by the third baseman and Santiago Chirino followed with a single the other way. After a fielder's choice, Andrew Godbold knocked a two-out RBI single to avoid the shutout.

While Jacinto Garcia struggled in his eighth career start, the Belter bullpen picked him up. Trevor Simms came in and shutout the Freedom while picking up his 12th strikeout. Kuehl McEachern followed and rolled a 4-6-3 double play to throw a scoreless 8th. Then Sam Vega moved from third base and came in to finish the ninth. In his first-ever appearance, he only gave up one hit and prevented any more damage.

The CornBelters dug themselves into a big hole in the series opener and could never regroup. Florence scored two runs off a home run in the second and then ignited to score six more in the third off Garcia to lead 8-0. Then finally added their ninth run in the sixth.

Tomorrow is day two of Jose Canseco weekend, where he will serve as the designated hitter again with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
