NORMAL, Ill. - Before the festivities kicked off for the first day of Jose Canseco weekend presented by the Town of Normal, Manager Billy Horn has announced the signing of Tyler Frohwirth along with the release of Nick Garland and Kevin Matthews.
Frohwirth is the son of former major leaguer Todd Frohwirth who spent nine years in the MLB. His dad was a submarine pitcher that spent the majority of his career with the Orioles where he made 186 relief appearances for Baltimore from 1991-1993 and then served as a scout for them after his playing career.
This season, he spent time with the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Single-A Marlins) who former Belter Scott Sebald is currently with. While there Frohwirth pitched in eight games and picked up two saves. After he was released, he signed with the Chicago Dogs for their inaugural season in the American Association.
The sidearmer was drafted in the 31st round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2016 draft and was assigned to their Rookie Ball club in the Gulf Coast League. He pitched in 18 games and picked up 10 saves with a 2.08 ERA. Frohwirth held a 1-1 record while striking out 14 compared to just three walks in 17.1 innings.
In 2017, the Baltimore native spent time between Advanced-A and Low-A for the Phillies. Then he was traded to his hometown Orioles in July before his roster status was changed to the Miami Marlins on the same day. Frohwirth pitched in 14 games totaling for 16 innings and again he held an impressive strikeout to walk comparison, 16-4.
He played collegiately at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Frohwirth was redshirted his freshman year then went on to make 33 relief appearances in his three seasons. The former Maverick, owned a 3-0 record with one save while striking out 24 and walking 12 in 32 innings.
Today the first day of "Jose Canseco Weekend" presented by the Town of Normal. Former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco will serve as the Normal CornBelters' designated hitter for the weekend. The gates will open at 6:05 p.m. for all fans, but will feature an early access period beginning at 5:05 for fans who bring $1 to donate to Wish Bone Canine Rescue. These fans will be able to watch the CornBelters' batting practice and Canseco warm up prior to the game.
