Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Avon, OH - Things started well enough for Lake Erie on Wednesday night as they took a 4-1 lead over Traverse City after three innings. But the Beach Bums would score six unanswered runs to top the Crushers 7-4 to take two out of three in the series.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Jodam Rivera led off the inning with his first home run of the season. Luke Hetherington would add an RBI double and Tim Binkoski would tack on a run-scoring single to propel the Crushers to a 3-1 lead. Binkoski would strike again in the third inning as he blasted his first homer of the season over the fence in right field to give Lake Erie a three run advantage. But it would be a lead that would prove to be short-lived.

Traverse City scored twice in the fourth inning, including a homer by Kyle Maunus to pull to within one. Then in the fifth, John Alonso led off with a solo shot to tie the game at four.

The Crushers would surrender a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Corey Whiting and an RBI single by Mike Epping to give Traverse City a 6-4 lead. The Beach Bums would score again in the ninth on an RBI double by Brad Miller to complete the 7-4 win. Cristobal Mata took the defeat in relief to fall to 2-3 on the season, while Kevin Reese went five innings for the Beach Bums to earn the win and improve to 3-2. Jeff Williams picked up his sixth save.

"This is a tough loss to take," said Binkoski afterwards. "Give them credit, they came up with some good plays on defense and they came through when they needed to. That's how it goes sometimes."

The homestand continues Thursday evening for the Crushers as they open a three game series with Midwest starting at 7:05 PM.
