ThunderBolts Sweep Double Header

June 17, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Windy City ThunderBolts News Release

The Windy City ThunderBolts held the top hitting team in the Frontier League to a total of four runs in sweeping a doubleheader from the River City Rascals winning game one 4-3 and taking the nightcap 4-1.

Windy City got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homerun by Vinnie Scarduzio, his fifth of the season. The Rascals tied it in the top of the third with a homerun by Jorge Gutierrez to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bolts got the run back and then some in the bottom of the third. Dan Jordan made a nice impression on the Crestwood faithful as he clubbed a leadoff homer in the inning. After a Gilberto Mejia double, extending his hitting streak to 21 games, Guillermo Martinez reached on fielder's choice sending Mejia to third where he would come home on a sac fly by Bryan Cook to put Windy City up 3-1. J. T. Restko singled moving Martinez to third. The second sacrifice fly of the inning, this time off the bat of Vinnie Scarduzio plated Martinez for a 4-1 WC edge.

River City would not be deterred however, as the Rascals came right back with two runs in the top of the fourth to cut it to 4-3. Despite chances for the Rascals, the ThunderBolts were able to hold off River City and hold on for the one-run win. Dustin Pease (4-1) pitched five innings for the victory. Dylan Axelrod finished off the seventh for his fourth save of the year. Daniel Howard (1-2) took the loss despite tossing a complete game for River City.

Game two would go scoreless into the fourth when Vinnie Scarduzio tripled to lead off the inning and came home on a Doug Coe sac fly. In the fifth, Gilberto Mejia homered to left for a 2-0 ThunderBolts lead. Windy City put the game away in the sixth with a pair of runs, the key shot a Gilberto Mejia triple, scoring pinch-runner Brandon Garner, ran over Pete Paris to score and put the Bolts up by four.

That was plenty enough for Ross Stout (3-0) who was fantastic allowing just one unearned run over 6.2 innings, walking just one and striking out three. Dylan Axelrod got the final out on one pitch for his fifth save of the year.

With his 3-for-3 performance in game two, Mejia extended his hitting streak to 22 games.
