Gateway Grizzlies News Release

SAUGET, IL-The Southern Illinois Miners scored five times in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday to turn a pitcher's duel into a route, defeating the Gateway Grizzlies 9-3 in front of 4,921 at GCS Ballpark.

Leading 4-2 at the time, Southern Illinois (14-10) used five his in the ninth to open it up. Kevin Koski capped the scoring with a three-run home run to right, his first of the season. Randy Molina and Gered Mochizuki each had run-scoring hits in the inning for the Miners. All five runs came off Grizzlies' reliever Chad Epperson. Epperson was making his second appearance of the season, and of his pro career.

The Miners got on the board first thanks to three first-inning hits. The Grizzlies (8-16) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Charlie Lisk.

Southern Illinois tacked on single runs in the second and third innings to push the lead to 3-2. It stayed that way until the seventh. With two outs in the inning, the Miners loaded the bases against Grizzlies' starter Adam Bowling on hits by Brad Miller and Jereme Milons and a walk to Andrew Sweet. Bowling hit Molina with an 0-2 pitch to force in Miller from third and put the Miners up 4-2.

Chad Rothford hit a one-out solo home run, his fifth of the year, in the ninth to make it 9-3.

Bowling suffered the loss for the Grizzlies allowing four runs on 12 hits over 6.2 innings. He struck out four.

Lisk finished 2-4 with the two RBIs. Lisk continues to lead the league in hitting and RBIs and now has 31 for the season. Rothford was 2-4 with the homer.

The Grizzlies will begin a three-game series with Rockford Thursday night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
