Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, endured a 16-minute light delay in the ninth inning of Friday night's game at All Pro Freight Stadium, and came away with a 7-2 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums.

The game was delayed with one out in the top of the ninth inning, after a set of lights above the third base concourse went out. For the Crushers (15-14) the victory marked their second straight in a series opener, while the loss for the Beach Bums (9-21) was their fifth in a row.

The runs came early and often for the Crushers, as they plated runs in each of the first three innings, and they never trailed in the contest.

Carlos Avila began the bottom of the first inning with a single to center field, before Cody Herald's sacrifice bunt moved him to second base. Moments later, Jose Barraza belted a RBI single to left center to score Avila, giving the Crushers a 1-0 lead.

The Beach Bums answered in the top of the second, as they tied the game by scoring a run on three base hits. Steven Patterson reached on a one out single to right, and scored the game tying run on Brian Portelli's two out RBI single.

Lake Erie regained the lead in with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Newly acquired Scott Carcaise started the inning with a double down the left field line, and scored moments later. Parker Norris reached on a bunt base hit, but an errant throw from the catcher Gaby Juarbe ended up in right field, allowing Carcaise to score. Brady North followed with a bunt single to put Norris on third, and he score on Bryan De La Rosa's sacrifice fly.

Ryan Bottger started the top of the third inning with a double down the right-field line, advanced to third on a groundout, and came home on Jose Vargas's RBI groundout.

The Crushers put two more on the board in the bottom of the third, on Eric Grabe's two-run homer to left, his first as a member of the Crushers.

Lake Erie added single runs in the sixth and seventh. Norris started the sixth inning on a single back up the middle, and North laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him to second, before De La Rosa drove him home on a RBI single. Jose Barraza walked to start the seventh, and scored two batters later on Brendan Costantino's pinch hit RBI triple.

Jordan Kraus (2-2) scored the victory for the Crushers, allowing just a pair of runs on nine hits while fanning three over six innings of work. Jacob Lanning (2-4) took the loss for Traverse City, after allowing six runs, five earned on eight hits over 5.1 innings of action.

Nine Crushers hit safely on the night, but nobody was able to hit safely more than once. Graber and De La Rosa drove in two runs each.

The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums on Saturday night at All Pro Freight Stadium. The Crushers have not announced their starter, and the Beach Bums will go with right-hander Rob Blanc (0-1, 5.57). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
