Florence Y'alls News Release
Sauget, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzles hit five home runs to send the Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, to their tenth straight loss.
In the 6-2 win, Gateway (14-18) scored all of their six runs on home runs, four solo shots and one two-run bomb. Florence (7-23) only mustered three hits in the game, but drew seven walks in the first five innings.
Florence opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Andrew Godbold drew a one-out walk. The next batter, Jordan Brower, lined a ball into right-center. Goldbold moved to third on the play and Brower tried to stretch out a double, but got caught in a rundown between first and second. Brower stayed alive long enough until a throw got away, allowing Godbold to come home safely.
Jeremy Gooding was lights out through his first three innings, allowing just a double and a single, but left one up in the zone to Tyler Tewell in the fourth and the Gateway catcher smashed a home run to right-center.
The Freedom retook the lead in the top of the fifth. Collins Cuthrell drew a walk and Godbold delivered a double to the right-center field gap, scoring Cuthrell from first. That marked the end for Gateway starter Adam Eggnatz who walked seven, but only allowed only two runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Gateway hit four more home runs in the next two innings to take a 6-2 lead. Sam Fischer and Logan Davis went back-to-back in the fifth before Brandon Thomas and Ben Waldrip (two-run) both went yard in the sixth.
The Grizzles rode the long balls and Dakota Smith to the victory. Smith sat down all 13 batters he faced to end the ballgame.
Godbold, Brower, and Vail each had one hit for the Freedom. Pete Levitt, Matt Pobereyko, and Ethan Gibbons all pitched scoreless outings out of the Freedom bullpen. The Florence offense left eight men on base in the first five innings, including stranding the bases loaded in the fourth.
The Freedom look to get back in the win column when they face Gateway in game two of the series tomorrow. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Central time. Cody Gray will make his first appearance of the season and face off against Will Landsheft (1-3, 3.27 ERA).
