Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners were held to just a single run on the scoreboard on Friday night against the Normal CornBelters at Rent One Park, as Normal right-hander Chris Carmain pitched a complete game in a 5-1 Miners loss, just the team's second in their last 13 games overall.
The CornBelters jumped on Dyllon Nuernberg in the first inning for three straight singles to lead off the game, scoring three times to take a 3-0 lead. Southern Illinois would get a run back in the second when on a fielder's choice, Steve Marino came around to score on a ball hit by Francisco Rosario to make the score 3-1. Nuernberg (2-1) would settle down and end up pitching seven innings on the night, but also surrendered a two-run homer to Nolan Meadows in the fourth inning for the final margin.
The Miners' offense was held down by Carmain (2-3), who needed 140 pitches to go the distance and also had to ward off a late Miners rally. After not allowing a single hit in the third through seventh innings before Brendan O'Brien's leadoff double in the eighth, Carmain would run into a bases-loaded situation in the ninth thanks to hits by Marino, Vin Guglietti and Riley Moore. But with the tying run at the plate, O'Brien bounced out to third to end the game.
On the night, O'Brien and Guglietti each had two hits, with O'Brien adding a double. Aaron Gates also had a double in the contest to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, as the Miners dropped to 20-11 on the season.
The two teams will square off once more on Saturday night at Rent One Park, with a special start time of 7:05 p.m. Rick Teasley will be on the hill as the Miners celebrate their 10th Anniversary with postgame fireworks and a pregame ceremony honoring the All-Decade Team, made up of some of the greatest players in Miners history.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
