Crushers finish sweep of CornBelters

Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie pitching staff finished what they started on Tuesday with another spectacular performance on Thursday afternoon. Crushers starter Donald Murray (1-1) tossed seven scoreless innings and Sean Hurley homered as Lake Erie (4-2) won their fourth consecutive game by the score of 2-0.

The Crushers pitching staff had held the CornBelters (1-5) to just two runs in the first two games of the series. Murray, who was coming off of a tough outing against Southern Illinois, used seven strikeouts and a couple of double plays to hold the Normal offense to no runs and just five hits over seven innings.

In the second inning, Murray induced a 5-4-3 double play to get out of trouble. The right-hander did the same thing in the fifth inning when Justin Fletcher grounded into a double play.

Offense was hard to come by for the Crushers on Thursday. CornBelters starter Scott Sebald (1-1) went eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits but one of them was the difference maker.

In the fourth inning, Sean Hurley blasted a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season. The solo shot from the Crushers outfielder was all the offense that Murray and the bullpen needed. That was just the second home run of the season for the Lake Erie offense.

The Crushers did add a run in the eighth after a ground rule double from Bryan DeLaRosa, who later scored after Dane Hutcheon's sacrifice fly.

Max Biedrzycki pitched a quick eighth inning and Justin Sinibaldi picked up his first save of the year. The Crushers pitching staff recorded eight strikeouts in the game, bringing their total to 33 strikeouts in the series.

Aaron Hill also extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the seventh inning. Hill is leading the way for the Crushers with a .389 batting average to start the year.

Lake Erie will host the Washington Wild Things this weekend with Friday night being the official home opener at Sprenger Stadium. Franderlin Romero (0-1) will face Ryan Castellanos (0-0) at 7:05 PM. Saturday's game begins at 6:05 PM and Sunday will feature a 2:05 PM start time.
