Lake Erie Crushers News Release

WASHINGTON, Pa. -The Lake Erie Crushers fell to the Washington Wild Things on Thursday night, 5-2, in the final game of the series as Washington scored early and never trailed, eventually stopping the Crushers late rally.

With the loss, the Crushers (15-24), fall to 1-5 on the season series with Washington, and have lost five of their last six games. The win for the Wild Things (18-24) marks their fourth win in a row and they have now won five of their last seven games.

The Wild Things were able to touch home plate first as Daniel Poma doubled to lead off the bottom part of the first inning. Next, C.J. Beatty flew out to right in foul territory which allowed Poma to tag and move to third. The next batter, Scott Kalamar, grounded out to second and Poma was able to score.

Neither team scored again until the fifth inning when the Wild Things added three insurance runs. With one out, Maxx Garrett singled and moved to second as Poma was hit by a pitch. Kolby Moore then relieved Crushers starter Brad Duffy (4-2) to face Beatty. Beatty walked to load the bases before Kalamar hit a bases clearing double that put Washinton up by four.

The Wild Things did more damage in the bottom of the sixth inning as Daniel Popkins hit a solo home run to put Washington up by five. For Popkins, the big fly was his third home run in the past two games.

The Crushers first scored in the top of the seventh inning as Joey Burney doubled to lead off the inning. Then with two outs, Juan Sanchez tripled on a strange play that saw Sanchez safe at third and allowed Burney to score. Sanchez would be stranded there as Emmanuel Quiles, the next batter, struck out to end the inning.

In the eighth inning, the Crushers added one more as Chandler Brock walked to begin the inning. Anderson Hidalgo then doubled to plate Brock and cut the Wild Things' lead to three with nobody out in the inning. Ty Nelson and Jose Barraza then struck out and Joey Burney grounded out to second to end the inning.

The Crushers left 10 on base in the game and left 25 runners on base over the three game series.

For the Crushers, Duffy went 4.1 innings in his first start of the season. He allowed five hits and three earned runs, while striking out four. The Crushers bullpen of Moore, Mike Devine and Todd Kibby threw 3.2 innings allowing three hits and two runs. For Washington, Kyle Helisek (4-2) went 7.1 innings allowing eight hits, two runs and struck out eight batters. Jonathan Kountis (2) pitched the ninth inning giving up two hits and walking one but was able to shut the door on the Crushers and pick up the save.

The Crushers come home and begin a three game series at All Pro Freight Stadium as they take on the Windy City ThunderBolts beginning on Friday night. Lake Erie will start left hander Brad Zambron (1-3, 4.54). Windy City's starter will be right hander Travis Tingle (2-4, 2.80). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
