Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, PA-Extra base hits were aplenty in Thursday night's contest from CONSOL Energy Park as the Washington Wild Things kept the pressure on Lake Erie and came out victorious by a final score of 5-2. Kyle Helisek earned his fourth mound victory of the season while Brad Duffy suffered the loss.
The Wild Things continued their trend of scoring in the early innings when center fielder Danny Poma scored on a groundout from right fielder Scott Kalamar in the bottom of the first. Kalamar later extended the Washington lead to 4-0 with a bases-clearing double: the fourth of Washington's six extra base hits on the night.
On the mound, Helisek kept the Lake Erie bats at bay through six scoreless innings until Crushers shortstop Juan Sanchez tripled to score designated hitter Joey Burney. Helisek finished his night going 7.1 innings with three walks and striking out eight.
In the latter half of the sixth, Wild Things left fielder David Popkins continued to be a tough out for the Crushers, belting his 11th home run of the season and third in six at-bats to give Washington a 5-1 lead.
While Lake Erie added another run in the top of the seventh thanks to a double from third baseman Anderson Hidalgo, the three-run deficit proved to be too much as Jonathan Kountis tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the season and the Wild Things' fourth-straight victory.
The Wild Things will stay at home for the remainder of the Fourth of July Weekend to host the Joliet Slammers for a three-game bill beginning Friday, July 3. First pitch from tomorrow's contest at CONSOL Energy Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with fireworks following the game.
