Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers bounced back from a series opening loss by dominating the Frontier Greys 7-1 on Tuesday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The win for the Crushers (30-26) marked the sixth time out of their last eight chances that they have bounced back from a series opening loss with a victory. The loss for the Greys (18-39) was just their fifth loss in the last 11 games.
The Crushers never trailed in the game and scored their seven runs in just three separate innings. They were also helped by a dominant pitching performance from Zac Treece (3-2). Treece held the Greys to one run on three hits in eight innings of work.
Lake Erie broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the second inning. Adam Ford walked with one out, one of the four times he would reach base in the game. The next batter Joey Burney hit a double over the centerfielder, Chris Ellison's head to plate Ford from first and give Lake Erie the early advantage.
The Crushers used some two-out thunder the following inning to add to their lead. After Kevin Franchetti and Trevor Stevens got on to start the inning, Greys starter Mark Belcastro (0-1) retired the next two Crushers Juan Sanchez and Craig Hertler on a strikeout and flyout respectively. Andrew Davis, Anderson Hidalgo, and Adam Ford then followed with back to back to back 2-out RBI singles to give Lake Erie a four-run advantage.
Zac Treece was dominant most of the night but ran into his biggest jam in the 5th. After retiring the first two batters in the inning, Treece allowed back to back walks to Jon Dziomba and Greg Bachman. Ramon Ortega then continued the two out rally with a double to plate Dziomba and give Frontier its lone run of the game.
Lake Erie scored its final three runs of the night in the bottom half of the fifth. Adam Ford singled with one out and then stole second. He advanced to third on an error by the catcher Ortega and scored on a single from Joey Burney. The next batter Ryan Hutchison launched a towering fly ball over the right field fence, his fourth home run on the season to give the Crushers a 7-1 lead.
Treece continued to dominate with the six-run advantage. He allowed just one hit and faced the minimum nine batters in his final three innings of work. Brandon Smith struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to close out the victory.
Treece (3-2) took the win in this one allowing one run on three hits in eight innings of work. Mark Belcastro (0-1) took the loss in his 2014 debut allowing seven runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.
In a game where all nine Crushers had at least one hit, Lake Erie was led by two Crushers that had multi-hit games. Adam Ford went 2-3 on the evening with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Joey Burney went 2-4 on the night with two runs batted in and a run scored. Juan Sanchez extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the fifth inning.
The rubber match of this series will kickoff tomorrow afternoon at 11:05. Zach Gordon (0-2, 2.53) will pitch for Lake Erie. The Greys will counter with Brandon Rohde (5-2, 3.35).
