Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, ILL. (JULY 22, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners got two home runs by CHRIS BURKE to support six and one-third shutout frames by MIGUEL RAMIREZ, and tacked on three runs in the eighth in a 6-0 win at Rent One Park.
With the victory, the Miners clinched their tenth-straight series win at home and won their sixth game in a row against the Grizzlies overall.
Burke's first long ball came in the second, when RYAN CAVAN worked a leadoff walk before the Miners' first baseman homered two batters later to give Southern Illinois a 2-0 lead. It was his first home run since June 20th, also at home, against the Evansville Otters.
Ramirez (4-4), meanwhile, shut down the Gateway bats, allowing just two baserunners and retiring 12 batters in a row from the third through the sixth. Madison Beaird singled to lead off the seventh inning, breaking the long streak as the third and final baserunner against Ramirez. He surrendered a season-low two hits while walking only one and striking out six.
Burke then led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, marking the first time a Miner had homered twice in a game this season. In the eighth, the Miners loaded the bases for Burke, and he drew a walk to drive in his fourth run of the game, tying a season-high. STEVE MARINO then ripped a two-run single to left to complete the scoring.
The Miners shut out an opponent for the seventh time this year, and sixth time at home. They will go for their second-straight sweep of Gateway when they face the Grizzlies for the final time in the regular season on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. MATT BYWATER gets the ball for Southern Illinois against Gateway's Ja'Vaun West.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
