
Miners Shutout Grizzlies in Middle Game of Series

MARION, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies collected just two hits and fell to the Southern Illinois Miners 6-0 Tuesday night at Rent One Park.
The loss was the Grizzlies second in a row at Southern Illinois, giving them the series loss. The Miners won for the eighth time in their last nine games. Gateway's lead in the West Division moved to just a half game with the loss.
Gateway (36-21) collected just two hits in the game, with one coming in the third inning on an Xavier Macklin leadoff single and the other in seventh inning on a Madison Beaird leadoff single.
Chris Burke powered the Miners (33-23) offense with two home runs and four runs batted in.
Burke blasted a two-run home run in the second inning and added a solo homer in the seventh to give the Miners a 3-0 lead.
Gateway starting pitcher Kerry Kelley (2-3) allowed the three runs on five hits in six and two thirds innings.
Burke added an RBI walk and Steve Marino brought in two runs on a single as part of a three-run eighth for the Miners to extend the lead to 6-0.
Gateway and Southern Illinois play the final game of their series Wednesday night. Right-hander Ja'Vaun West (6-1) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 at Rent One Park.
