Slammers Lose 7-5 in 12 Innings to Traverse City

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-rallied to force extra innings but lost 7-5 to Traverse City in 12 innings on Tuesday.

Brett Zawacki made his first start for Joliet and pitched very well. Over the 1st five innings he allowed just two hits but they were both solo home runs off the bat of Kevin Taylor. That meant the Slammers trailed 2-0 after five innings as Traverse City starter Alex Phillips was very good as well. He got out of a bases loaded jam in the 1st inning and lasted 5 2/3 innings before he was lifted. He ended up allowing just one run on a Danny Hernandez RBI double and four hits total. In the top of the 6th for the Beach Bums they scored twice on two hits, a walk and two errors. That made the score 4-1. Zawacki went the first six innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits. Joliet got back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game at 4-4. Grant DeBruin came through with a 2-run single and Russell Moldenhauer tied it with an RBI grounder. The game remained tied until extra innings. In the top of the 12th inning, Traverse City broke the tie off of Jordan Wellander. Rob Bendecit's RBI single gave them the lead and Scott Woodward's 2-run double made it 7-4. The Slammers did not give up and score in the bottom of the 12th on a RBI single from Moldenhauer to make it 7-5 against the Beach Bums reliever Scott Vachon. Vachon, the Plainfield North H.S. grad earned the win, going the final two innings. Joliet stranded 10 base runners and committed six errors in the game, the most on the season. They fall to 4-6 in extra innings games on the season.

Before the game, the Slammers added an infield to their roster. They signed Adrian English out of Barry University in Florida. He finished a great career there this spring by hitting .319. English was a four-year starter there and was a 2nd-team Division-2 All-American after his junior season when he hit an astonishing .395 with 51 RBI in 50 games.

The Slammers series with Traverse City concludes on Wednesday at 7pm. Following a six game road trip to Windy City and Traverse City, Joliet will return for another six game home stand. That action will include a Fireworks Friday on August 1st that will also be Princess Night at Silver Cross Field. Slammers action this summer is broadcast live on 1340 WJOL and wjol.com.
