Lake Erie Crushers News Release
NORMAL, Ill. -The Lake Erie Crushers took down the Normal Cornbelters, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in a game that saw the two teams combine for 16 hits and the Crushers coming from behind to take the final game of the series.
The win for the Crushers (11-19) snaps a four game losing streak. With the loss, the Cornbelters (18-14) are 3-7 in their last ten games.
The CornBelters were able to get the first runs on the board. Cameron Monger led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk. Monger stole second to put himself into scoring position for Mark Micowski who then hit an RBI single. Normal could not plate anymore runs in the inning, and stranded runners on first and third.
Down one run, the Crushers would then respond in the fourth inning as Ty Nelson hit a one out double. With Anderson Hidalgo at the plate, Nelson would move to third on a wild pitch. Hidalgo then hit a ground ball to third base that Richard Lucas could not field cleanly allowing Hidalgo to reach first and Nelson to score on the error. Jose Barraza struck out to end the top half of the inning and was ejected for arguing. Craig Massoni replaced the Crushers Designated Hitter.
The Crushers took their second lead of the series in the fifth inning. With two outs, Emmanuel Quiles singled and came around to score on a double off the bat of Trevor Stevens.
In the top of the ninth, the Crushers would add an insurance run. Massoni led off with a single. Frank Desico would then come in to pinch run and stole second with Juan Sanchez at the plate. Austin Prott then hit a one out single that plated Desico.
Brad Zambron (1-2) went five innings, allowing one run on five hits and walking two Cornbelters. Trevor Longfellow came on to pitch 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, walking two and giving up three hits. Daniel DeSimone (1) was able to get the final two outs of the game and pick up his first save of the season. Michael Schweiss (2-4), the Normal starter, picked up the hard luck loss. Schweiss went 7.1 innings, giving up two hits, one run, and two strikeouts. Victor Beriguete, Stephen Frey and Horacio Acosta came in to pitch out of the Cornbelters bullpen. The trio allowed one run.
