Slammers Fall 4-1 in Series Finale against River City

Walter Pitches Strong Outing in Slammers 4-1 LossJoliet, IL- Joliet Slammers (12-21) pitcher Kevin Walter surrenders just one earned run in eight innings, but the Slammers fall to the River City Rascals (19-13) 4-1 on Sunday.

Walter cruised through the first three innings without allowing a hit and striking out four. He ran into some problems in the first, giving up back-to-back hits to catcher Josh Ludy and 1B Danny Canela. With runners at the corners, Walter got DH Taylor Ard to fly out, ending the inning.

The Rascals scored on some shaky Slammers defense in the fifth. 2B Hector Crespo reached as a ground ball got passed Adam Giacalone at first. He moved to second on a throwing error by catcher Jack Cleary and came around to score on an RBI single by 3B Josh Silver. The Rascals led 1-0 after the top of the fifth.

The Rascals scored another run in the sixth. CF Curan Redal was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He stole second and moved to third a ground ball by LF Bryan Hansen. Catcher Josh Ludy then bounced the baseball to SS Alfred Rodriguez. Rodriguez's throw home was behind the runner, and Redal scored giving the Rascals a 2-0 lead.

The Slammers had a hard time cracking starter Tim Koons until the bottom of the seventh when RF Casey Fletcher homered for the first time this season which cut the deficit in half. The Rascals would get that run back in the top of the eighth as Canela hit a sacrifice fly scoring Curan Redal.

Pitcher Sam Moore came in for the ninth and walked RF Zach Kometani, who stole second and advanced to third on a single from 3B Josh Silver. Kevin McNorton came in and gave up an RBI single to Redal that stretched the Rascals lead to three. The Slammers would go quietly in their last at bat. Kevin Walter (0-2) took the tough luck loss, pitching eight innings, allow one earned run (three total) while striking out seven and walking one. He is our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game. The loss concluding the Slammers 1-5 home stand. The team is 2-8 in their last 10 games. Joliet has a day off tomorrow before starting a three game set with the Schaumburg Boomers on Tuesday.
