WASHINGTON, PA-The Washington Wild Things were unable to overcome early deficits on Sunday, June 21, losing both games in an afternoon doubleheader to the visiting Frontier Greys.

In game one of the Sunday twinbill, the Wild Things were unable to overcome a three-run first inning deficit, falling by a final score of 6-0 to the Greys. Kyle Vazquez was credited with the loss, while Bobby Shore earned the win for Frontier.

The Greys' three runs in the first inning came off of the bats of designated hitter Dillon Haupt, first baseman Scott Carcaise and second baseman Jose Sermo. A solo home run from right fielder Jhiomar Veras in the fourth added to the vantage making it 4-0.

For Washington, it took until the seventh inning for any offense to be strung together, as Frontier starter Bobby Shore held the Wild Things to just one hit through six innings while throwing eight strikeouts. After the Greys extended their lead to six runs in the fifth, shortstop Austin Wobrock and catcher John Fidanza tallied back-to-back singles with two outs in Washington's final at-bat. Frontier closer Andrew Wellwerts was able to work out of the situation, however, sealing the game one win.

In game two, Washington's Tim Flight took the role of overpowering pitcher, retiring 10-consecutive Greys before allowing the first hit of the game in the top of the fifth. Frontier was able to punch through the barrier in the top half of the sixth, however, when Carcaise notched a double to score two runs late in the game.

Washington right fielder Scott Kalamar tried to inch the Wild Things back into the game with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning, but the efforts were too little too late, allowing the Greys to capture their second victory of the day by a final score of 2-1.

The Wild Things will be back in action on Wednesday, June 24 when they travel to UC Health Stadium to battle the Florence Freedom in a midweek doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action on WJPA 95.3 FM with Randy Gore and/or follow live in-game tweets on our Twitter handle @washwildthings.
