Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers scored their second sweep of the season on Friday evening, as they shutout the Windy City Thunderbolts for the second night in a row, with a 6-0 victory at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The victory for the Crushers (36-30) secured their second sweep of the season, and their fifth shutout victory of the season, while the loss for the Thunderbolts (24-41) dropped their record to 2-4 against the Crushers on the year.
Lake Erie used four hurlers to combine for the five-hit shutout. Zac Treece (4-3) started the contest, while Brad Zambron, Jordan McCoy and Trevor Longfellow took them to the finish line. The Crusher bullpen did not allow a single run in the series, as Lake Erie tossed 23 consecutive scoreless innings to end the series.
The Crushers scored their first run in the bottom of the third. Trevor Stevens and Craig Hertler began the inning with back-to-back base hits, and Andrew Davis brought Stevens home on a sacrifice fly to snap the scoreless tie.
Juan Sanchez extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a pair of hits on the night, the second of which was a double down the left field line to start the fourth inning. Sanchez scored later in the fourth on Joey Burney's single to right center, and Stevens drove Ryan Hutchison home on a sac fly.
Hertler led off the fifth inning with a triple, which was his second of three hits on the night, and he came home moments later on a wild pitch to give the Crushers a 4-0 lead.
Lake Erie then used a pair of two-out RBI singles to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Franchetti walked to start the two out rally, and Stevens followed with a base hit. Hertler and Emmanuel Quiles followed with back-to-back RBI singles to cap the two-run rally.
Treece scored the victory for the Crushers after tossing 5.2 scoreless innings of three hit ball and struck out four along the way. Windy City's Eli Anderson (1-6) took the loss after surrendering six runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings of action.
Hertler paced the Crushers offensively again, going 3-for-4 while reaching four times with a run and RBI. He's now reached safely in 19 straight games, and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Quiles, Sanchez, and Stevens also hit safely twice. Sanchez's 17-game hitting streak is Lake Erie's longest of the season, while Stevens extended his hitting streak to six games.
The Crushers will begin a three-game series against the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. Lefty Matt Rein (0-5, 5.63) will throw for the Crushers, and the Otters will counter with right-hander Taylor Dennis (2-1, 5.01). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
