Syracuse, NY (October 17, 2002) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that they have named right wing David Ling as their team captain for the 2002-03 season. The club also announced that right wing Matt Davidson, left wing Mathieu Darche and defensemen Darrel Scoville and Trent Cull will serve as alternates.

Ling, 27, becomes the sixth full-time team captain in franchise history (Dane Jackson, 1994-95, Mark Wotton, 1995-99, Brian Bonin, 1999-00, Mike Gaul, 2000-01, Sean Pronger, 2001-02).

Ling appeared in 71 games with the Crunch last season, recording 19 goals, 41 assists and a career high 240 penalty minutes. In five games with Columbus, Ling recorded seven penalty minutes. A veteran of 266 AHL games with Saint John, Fredericton and Syracuse, Ling tied for the team lead in playoff goals (5) and points (10) during the 2001-02 Calder Cup Playoffs.

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ling joined the Columbus organization as a free agent on July 10, 2001. He was originally drafted by Quebec with their ninth choice, 179th overall in the 1993 Entry Draft.

Darche and Scoville will serve as alternates at home games, while Davidson and Cull will fulfill the duties during road games.

The Crunch open their ninth AHL season on Friday, October 18 in Hamilton. The Crunch's Express Mart Opening Night is Saturday, October 19 against the Binghamton Senators. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a mini Championship Banner, courtesy of Express Mart.
