Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Carter Verhaeghe scored twice to help lift the Syracuse Crunch over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-1, tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
The win gives the Crunch 40 wins on the season for the sixth time in franchise history. The team is now 40-19-3-4 and have swept the two-game season series against the Sound Tigers.
Goaltender Eddie Pasquale stopped 22-of-23 shots between the pipes for the Crunch. Kristers Gudlevskis turned aside 26-of-29 in net for the Sound Tigers. Both Syracuse and Bridgeport converted on 1-of-2 power play opportunities.
The Crunch opened scoring on the man-advantage five minutes into the first period. Mat Bodie carried the puck into the zone and passed back to Mathieu Joseph on the right wing. The forward centered the puck for Verhaeghe to net from between the circles.
Syracuse built a two-goal lead two minutes into the middle stanza. Kevin Lynch tipped Alexander Volkov's shot from the top of the left circle, but it was stopped by Gudlevskis. The rebound was left in front of the net for Walcott to clean up.
The Sound Tigers finally got on the board with a power-play goal at the 12:27 mark of the third period. Casey Bailey beat Pasquale with a one-timer from the left point. Sebastian Aho and Travis St. Denis earned the assists.
Verhaeghe potted his second of the night with 7:33 to go in the final period. Matthew Peca skated the puck into the zone on a 2-on-1 and backhanded a feed to Verhaeghe. His first shot was blocked but he recovered his own rebound and scored on the second chance. Matthew Spencer tallied the secondary helper.
With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Lynch added an empty-netter with the help of Volkov to secure a Crunch victory.
The Crunch continue their season-long homestand tomorrow against the Utica Comets at 7 p.m.
Single game tickets and packages are on sale now and can be purchased in person at the Crunch office located inside the War Memorial Arena at 800 S.
