BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - After coming back to tie the game twice, the Binghamton Devils scored three consecutive goals in a five-round shootout to top the Syracuse Crunch, 4-3, tonight at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
Cal Foote opened scoring halfway through the first period on his first shot in his first professional game before Gabriel Dumont built a two-goal lead. The Devils climbed back to knot the score in the second, then again after Carter Verhaeghe lit the lamp early in the third. The loss moves the Crunch to 43-2-3-5 on the season and 7-1-0-1 in the 10-game series against the Devils.
Eddie Pasquale stopped 36-of-39 shots and 2-of-5 shootout attempts between the pipes for the Crunch. Eddie Lack turned aside 18-of-21 and 3-of-5 skaters in the shootout to earn the win for the Devils. Syracuse went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Binghamton went 2-for-6.
Syracuse was first on the board halfway through the opening frame. Alexander Volkov came into the zone down the left boards and circled around the back of the cage before feeding Foote at the right point. His shot deflected off a defender and past Lack. Mat Bodie earned the secondary assist.
The Crunch doubled their lead with 4:22 remaining in the first frame. Dumont was in the slot to redirect Erik Cernak's shot from the blue line. Mathieu Joseph tallied a point on the goal.
Binghamton stole one back on the power play 2:39 into the second stanza. Christoph Bertschy passed down to Nick Lappin at the goal line. He quickly sent a centering feed for Blake Pietila to chip in from the slot.
With three seconds remaining in the second period, the Devils knotted the score with another power-play marker. Pietila threw a lead pass up the left wing for Lappin to fire on net. Pasquale made the save, but left the rebound out for Brett Seney to score his first professional goal.
Syracuse went back on top four minutes into the third period. During a battle in front of the net, Verhaeghe poked the puck to send it five-hole and across the goal line. Matthew Peca and Volkov tallied the assists on the go-ahead goal.
The Devils capitalized on a turnover to tie the game for a second time at the 6:59 mark. Lappin stole the puck at the blue line and sent it towards the goal for Kevin Rooney to jam in.
After a scoreless overtime frame, Mitchell Stephens scored in the second round of the shootout, but Pietila potted one in the third to keep it going. Verhaeghe and McLeod scored back-to-back in the fourth round before Jake Walman netted the game-winner in the fifth.
The Crunch return home to host the Utica Comets tomorrow at 7 p.m.
