Crunch Announce New ECHL Affiliation
October 4, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY (October 4, 2007) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that they, along with their parent club the Columbus Blue Jackets, have entered into a one-year agreement with the Elmira Jackals to serve as the ECHL affiliate for both clubs.
"We are excited with the opportunity to have our ECHL affiliate in Elmira," said Syracuse Crunch President and CEO Howard Dolgon. "The affiliation with Elmira is an opportunity to link the Twin Tiers and Central New York, allowing fans of both organizations an opportunity to follow the development of Columbus' prospects."
The close proximity of Elmira and Syracuse will be mutually beneficial to the Jackals and the Crunch travel-wise. The two cities are about 90 miles from one another.
"We are very pleased to have the Elmira Jackals as our ECHL affiliate. The foundation of any successful franchise is the development of its young players and we think this relationship will be a very positive one for our organization," said Blue Jackets General Manager Scott Howson.
"We think the close proximity of Elmira to our AHL affiliate in Syracuse will be a tremendous benefit for both those clubs and an asset to our efforts to develop players at the minor professional level," Howson added.
The Jackals will enter their first year of play in the ECHL as the premier 'AA' affiliate for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
"This is one more element that further solidifies the professional hockey landscape in Elmira," stated Jackals general manager Robbie Nichols. "The reaction by the fans after we announced our move to the ECHL was tremendous, and now working with two outstanding organizations and what that will mean to the players here is very exciting."
The deal does not include a minimum player requirement. Earlier today defensemen Jon Landry and Trevor Hendrikx were both re-assigned by Columbus from Syracuse, making them the first players in the Columbus organization to be sent to Elmira.
The Crunch open their 14th AHL season on October 5 in Rochester. The club's Quickway Opening Night is set for Saturday, October 13 vs. Hartford. Tickets are available by calling the Crunch office at (315) 473-4444, stopping by the Oncenter box office located on the State Street side of the War Memorial or by calling TicketMaster at (315) 472-0700.
