Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads cruised to an 11-2 win against the Lexington Legends, before 2,854 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday evening .
Lexington (25-23) swung in front early with a solo shot by 3B Matt Duffy in the top of the second inning against RHP Nick Martinez. Martinez, though, kept the Legends from adding to the lead through the remainder of his four-inning outing while striking out five batters.
The Crawdads (23-24) quickly erased the deficit in the bottom of the third against RHP Jonas Dufek (L, 1-1). With RF Jordan Akins at first and one down, 1B Jhonny Gomez ripped an RBI double inside the left-field line to plate Akins and tie the game, 1-1.
Hickory then raced in front with a five-run frame in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one down, CF Zach Cone broke the tie with a solo home run over the left-field wall, lifting Hickory in front, 2-1. One out later, LF Jeremy Williams doubled his way on before C Kevin Torres worked a walk. Akins lined an RBI single to center field, bringing in Williams and moving Torres to third base. Gomez then belted the 'Dads further in front, hammering a three-run bomb over the left-field wall to make it 6-1.
The Crawdads kept swinging in the bottom of the fifth against RHP Euris Quezada. SS Hanser Alberto singled to start the inning. Quezada retired the next two 'Dads, but Alberto advanced to second in the process on a passed ball charged to C Mike Kvasnicka. 3B Drew Robinson worked a walk to get on, with ball four bouncing back to the backstop, allowing Alberto to move to third on a wild pitch. During Williams's at-bat, Quezada uncorked another wild pitch, enabling Alberto to score and advancing Robinson to second. Williams then connected for an RBI double and quickly took third base on the third wild pitch of the frame. Torres put the finishing touches on the rally with an RBI single, giving the 'Dads the 9-1 lead.
An RBI ground out by Lexington CF Jordan Scott against LHP Andrew Faulkner (W, 1-3) in the top of seventh chipped the 'Dads lead to 9-2, but Hickory stretched it right back out.
In the bottom of the eighth, Robinson knocked an RBI double off the left-field wall to score Cone, before a 2B Rougned Odor RBI double in the ninth drove in Akins, accounting for the 11-2 final score in the Crawdads blow-out win.
