Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (June 14, 2009) - The Hickory Crawdads held the Power to just two hits in the second half of Sunday's game at Appalachian Power Park and earned a series split with a 3-1 victory.
The Power scored their lone run in the bottom of the third. Robbie Grossman began the inning with a bunt base hit and scored later in the inning on Calvin Anderson's sacrifice fly. Bobby Spain followed with a base hit, but West Virginia would only get two more hits through the rest of the contest.
The Crawdads took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Leury Garcia and Cody Podraza ripped back-to-back two-out singles before Jake Kaase walked to load the bases. Erik Morrison followed with a two run double down the left field line to give the Crawdads the lead. A passed ball in the ninth inning allowed Garcia to score the game's final run.
Fabio Castillo (1-2) was fantastic in four innings of relief. He allowed no runs on one hit and struck out six to get the victory. Matt Nevarez worked a scoreless ninth inning to get his seventh save of the season. Gabriel Alvarado took the loss, but still pitched well. He allowed just two runs on eight hits over six innings and struck out three.
West Virginia fell to 24-39 after the loss, and the Crawdads improved to 30-31 after the win. Grossman and Austin McClune turned in the only multi-hit games for West Virginia with two hits a piece. Grossman has now hit safely in ten straight games and Austin McClune went 5-for-10 against the Crawdads. Marcus Davis singled in the ninth inning to extend his on base streak to eight games.
West Virginia will continue their nine game home stand and begin a three game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. The Power will start right hander Duke Welker (0-6, 4.27) and the Intimidators will counter with left hander Justin Edwards (3-3, 4.50). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
