CHARLESTON, W. Virginia - The Hickory Crawdads claimed a 3-1 win against the West Virginia Power before 3,543 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday evening. The Crawdads took their second game in a row against the Power, earning the split in the four-game series.

West Virginia (24-39) broke the scoreless tie with an unearned tally against RHP Joe Wieland in the bottom of the third. However, Wieland came out and retired the fourth in three-up, three-down fashion in his last frame of work, before Hickory (30-31) came back with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning against RHP Gabriel Alvarado to move ahead, 2-1.

SS Leury Garcia sparked the rally with a line drive single to right field, and was followed by a CF Cody Podraza bunt single and a DH Jake Kaase walk. With the bases loaded and two out, 1B Erik Morrison ripped a double down the left field line, bringing in Garcia and Podraza to erase the one-run deficit and put the Crawdads into the 2-1 lead.

RHP Fabio Castillo took over on the mound to start the bottom of the fifth inning, and completely dominated the West Virginia offense through the next four innings. He allowed only one baserunner (on a single) and struck out six through his outing, keeping Hickory in the one-run lead.

The Crawdads added an insurance run on a passed ball against RHP Owen Brolsma in the top of the ninth inning, before RHP Matt Nevarez took the mound in the bottom of the ninth. With the two-run lead, Nevarez allowed one runner on a single, but got PH Quincy Latimore to fly out to Podraza in deep center field to end the game and complete the 3-1 win for the Crawdads. Castillo earned the victory while Nevarez registered the save for Hickory, and Alvarado was tagged with the loss for West Virginia.
