Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads cruised to their third shutout victory of the week, topping the Savannah Sand Gnats, 6-0, before 2,988 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory on Friday night .
RHP Nick Martinez (W, 7-6) shut down the Sand Gnats (24-29, 65-55) with his second consecutive six-inning scoreless start. He limited Savannah to just two hits and one walk, while striking out four batters. Martinez only faced 19 hitters through six innings, just one more than the minimum.
The Crawdads (29-25, 65-58) cracked the scoreless tie against LHP Jim Fuller (L, 3-5) in the bottom of the fourth inning. With 3B Nick Urbanus on at second base and two down, CF Zach Cone ripped an RBI single to swing Hickory in front, 1-0.
Hickory tripled the lead with two more tallies in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one away, SS Luis Sardinas worked a walk to reach base. One out later and with RHP Carlos Vazquez on the mound, 1B Trever Adams drew a free pass to put runners at first and second. Cone then struck again, belting a two-run double to right-center field, plating both runners for the 3-0 advantage.
The Crawdads stretched the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one down, DH Kellin Deglan singled and moved to second when C Jorge Alfaro reached on an error. After a fly out advanced Deglan to third, both runners raced home on a two-run triple from Sardinas, making it 5-0.
Hickory put the finishing touch on the offensive charge in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two on and two down, Deglan knocked an RBI double to left-center field, plating Cone from second base for the 6-0 lead.
While Hickory was stretching the lead, RHP Paul Schwendel (S, 1) was picking up right where Martinez left off. Schwendel took over to start the top of the seventh and slammed the door on the Sand Gnats with three scoreless relief innings, closing the 6-0 shutout win for Hickory.
