CHARLESTON, SC - Brett Krill had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Augusta GreenJackets as they held off the Charleston RiverDogs 6-3 in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park with 4,932 on hand on Friday night.
Charleston falls to 62-58 (23-30 in the second half) with the loss and has split the first two games of this series. Augusta is now 59-63 (27-26 in the second half).
"We only got one inning out of our starter and we had to throw the bullpen out there early," said RiverDogs manager Carlos Mendoza. "I thought we battled hard and just came up a little short in the end."
The GreenJackets immediately tagged starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell (7-11) for three runs in the first inning. Brett Krill (3-5, RBI, 2 runs) started the scoring with an RBI single and an error brought in the second run. Garrett Buechele capped the inning by lining another RBI single into right for a 3-0 lead. Augusta tallied a fourth run one inning later when Jose Flores (3-5, RBI) doubled in Kelby Tomlinson.
Charleston cut into the deficit in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Saxon Butler and Rob Refsnyder (2-4, RBI). Augusta immediately responded with a two-run double by Jeff Arnold that stretched the lead to five.
In the sixth, the RiverDogs mounted a rally in an attempt to come back. Dante Bichette, Jr. sparked things by drilling a solo homer, his third of the year, over the left field wall. Three straight base hits, the last one an RBI single by Casey Stevenson, plated another run, but that was all they would get. Starter Adalberto Mejia (9-7) retired the next three batters in order to escape the jam and pick up the win for his six innings of work.
Mejia handed things over to his bullpen in the seventh, starting with Steven Neff, who tossed two scoreless innings. Kyle Vazquez then earned his eighth save by getting the last three outs.
