Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--Captains lefthander Tom Cowley worked seven shutout innings Sunday afternoon, leading the Captains to a 5-1 win over the Dlemarva Shorebirds at Classic Park.
Cowley, a 22-year-old, second-year pro out nof Oklahoma State, gave up a lead-off single to Lorenzo Scott and then proceeded to retire the next 16 batters in a row before giving up his only other hit, a one-out single to Rafael Rodriguez in the sixth.
Cowley (1-2), who walked none and struck out seven, finished by retiring the final five batters he faced. It was his first SAL win.
The Captains (3-1) broke a scoreless tie in the third when Mike Conroy and P.J. Hiser hit back-to-back homers off Brad Bergesen (2-1). Bergesen walked Chris Gimenez with two outs and then served up a long homer to right by Conroy, his ninth of the season. Hiser followed with his third of the year, a solo shot in almost the exact same spot as Conroy's.
The Captains made it 5-0 in the sixth on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Hiser and Matt Fornasiere.
The Shorebirds (1-3) registered an unearned run against Captains reliever Dustin Roddy in the eighth. Matt Loberg finished with a scoreless ninth for Lake County.
The Captains took three of four from the Shorebirds and will embark on a seven-game road trip beginning Monday night at Lakewood, New Jersey. Jim Deters is scheduled to pitch for the Captains against Lakewood's Matt Maloney in a 7:05 PM game.
The Captains will return to Classic Park for a three-game, holiday series on Monday, July 3rd. For tickets, call (440) 954-WINS.
