Cowen's Hat Trick Leads 10-1 Win
November 25, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Jared Cowen's first career hat-trick led a 10 goal barrage in a win over the Kamloops Blazers in the first half of a home-and-home series on Wednesday night in the Spokane Arena. Seven other Chiefs scored as Spokane went 3-4 on the power play, 6-6 on the penalty kill and held the Blazers to 16 shots in a 10-1 win, their fourth in a row at home.
Cowen becomes just the third defenseman in franchise history to record three goals in a game. Mitch Cornett did it in 1986, also versus Kamloops, and Bryan McCabe did it twice in the same season, 1993-94, against Victoria and Tri-City.
Spokane scored four in the first, went scoreless in the second and put six on the board in the third as they hit double digits for the second time this season. The Chiefs beat the Regina Pats 11-1 on October 30th.
Cowen scored the game's first just 59-seconds in by picking the stick side corner while taking advantage of a Kamloops penalty. Just eight seconds later Anthony Bardaro scored to make it 2-0. The goal fell just one second short of a franchise record the Chiefs equalled on Sunday night in Portland in their 3-1 win over the Winterhawks.
Tyler Johnson scored shorthanded at 7:40, Steve Kuhn tallied at 11:28 and it was 4-1 after the first period. Brendan Ranford scored the Blazer's lone goal at 3:25.
The Chiefs outshot Kamloops 13-3 in the second and scored on six of their 16 of their shots in the third.
Brenden Kichton, Mike Aviani, Kenton Miller and Matt Marantz joined Cowen's two goals in the third for the 10-1 final. Thirteen different players recorded points, eight of them with multiple points. Marantz, Johnson, Kuhn and Bardaro all had one goal and two assists.
The Chiefs will travel to Kamloops for Friday night's rematch at 7:00. Mike Boyle will go on the air with Comcast HockeyTonight at 6:30 on 1510 KGA.
Spokane returns home on Saturday night to host the Kelowna Rockets on Henry Weinhard's Ultimate Fan Weekend Giveaway.
Ticket to all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
