Spokane Chiefs News Release

Jared Cowen is coming back to the Spokane Chiefs. The Ottawa Senators made the move official today after their first round draft selection played in an exhibition game last night in Regina, Saskatchewan. It was the defenseman's second appearance for the NHL club in the last four days after he played in his first exhibition game on Friday night.

"Our Athletic Trainer Todd Daniels has been in continual contact with the Ottawa Senators medical team and we're expecting that he'll be ready to play when he gets to Spokane," Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said.

"I really like young players that step up the way he did," Ottawa Senators General Manager Bryan Murray said. "It was such a good performance overall (Monday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning) for a guy that hadn't played hockey in a long time. But probably, in the long run, it's better for him (to go back to junior hockey)."

The 18-year-old underwent knee surgery in February after suffering a season ending injury on January 30th.

The Senators selected the 6'5" blueliner with the ninth overall pick in June's NHL entry draft, becoming the highest ever Chiefs defenseman drafted by an NHL club.

Prior to the injury, Cowen appeared in 48 games, scored seven goals, 21 points and was a +16. In his rookie season of 2007-08, Jared Cowen appeared in 68 games, scored four goals and 18 points. Cowen also helped anchor the Chiefs defense to the 2008 Memorial Cup Championship scoring an empty net goal in the Championship Final versus the host Kitchener Rangers. He also served as an Alternate Captain for Canada's gold medal winning under-18 team in 2008's Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. His +28 led all rookie defenseman in the WHL in 2007-08.
