Cowen Makes Team Canada's Roster

Spokane Chief Captain Jared Cowen has been named to Team Canada's roster that will compete in the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships that begin on December 26th in Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan.

Cowen is one of 22 players, including seven defensemen, on the roster. In total, there are eight players from the Western Hockey League that will represent Canada. The Canadians have medaled at 11 straight IIHF World Junior tournaments including winning the gold in the last five outings.

Cowen was the Ottawa Senators first round selection, ninth overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The 6'5" defenseman has scored five goals and 17 points in 27 games this season and has posted a team high +16. Three of his goals have acted as the game winner. Currently in his third full season in Spokane, Cowen has played 147 games, scored 16 goals, 60 points and is a cumulative +63. Cowen's 31 career post season games include a Memorial Cup Championship in 2008.

On November 25th he served as an Assistant Captain for Team WHL's 2-1 win over Team Russia in the Subway Super Series.

Cowen is an Allan, Saskatchewan native, a 45 minute drive from where the gold medal game will be played in Saskatoon.

His history with Hockey Canada includes the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament where he served as an Assistant Captain for the gold medal winning under-18 team. He also helped Team West win the bronze medal at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2008. Cowen finished the tournament with seven helpers in six games and was named the Player of the Game for Team West three times.

Cowen is the second Chief in as many years to be named to Team Canada's roster. Last year, Chiefs goaltender Dustin Tokarski was in net when Team Canada won the gold medal in Ottawa. In the 10 tournament span from 1991-2000, Spokane had eight players on Team Canada at nine different tournaments. A Chief did not represent Team Canada in 1993 and Spokane has had two different players, Bryan McCabe and Brad Ference, play on two different clubs. The largest contingent of Chiefs in any one year was 1997 when Mike Babcock coached the baby 'Nats with Spokane captain Hugh Hamilton and forward Trent Whitfield.
