LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Stripers were stifled by Charlotte Knights right-hander Dylan Covey in a 4-1 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Coolray Field.

In the first of back-to-back morning start times between the two sides, Covey (W, 4-1) struck out a season-high nine batters over 6.1 innings, holding Gwinnett to just four hits and its lone run with one walk.

Charlotte took a first-inning lead after Stripers' starter Andres Santiago allowed a leadoff single to Charlie Tilson. Tilson took third on an errant pickoff throw by Santiago, and would score two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Matt Skole.

Tilson would score again in the third inning after he reached base on a third-strike passed ball by Stripers catcher Rob Brantly. Jacob May singled, then Tilson and May completed a double-steal to put two runners in scoring position. A walk of Skole loaded the bases, then Patrick Leonard grounded out to allow Tilson to cross home. Gwinnett right fielder Xavier Avery made a leaping catch at the wall on a Mason Robbins fly ball to keep the score at 2-0.

Santiago (L, 1-2) settled down after that, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. He finished at 6.0 innings with three hits, two runs - one earned - and three walks allowed with four strikeouts.

Gwinnett got a run back in the fifth when Danny Santana led off with a double and Brantly drove him in with a single.

But Charlotte regained a two-run lead in the seventh against Phil Pfeifer when Jake Elmore drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a fielder's choice, stole third and scored on an Eddy Alvarez single. The Knights added an insurance run in the ninth to take the 4-1 advantage.

Tilson led the way for Charlotte, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Xavier Cedeno (H, 5) and Jeanmar Gomez (S, 2) finished off the game for the Knights with 2.2 scoreless innings.

For the Stripers, Phil Gosselin was the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.

The Stripers (12-19) and Knights (14-18) close out the four-game series on Thursday with another 10:35 a.m. start time for Education Day at Coolray Field. Right-hander Lucas Sims (1-1, 1.46 ERA) is scheduled for Gwinnett, while lefty TJ House (1-3, 6.29 ERA) will start for Charlotte. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 10:05 a.m.
