Kane County Cougars News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - With both teams combining for 20 runs on 28 hits, the Kane County Cougars did just enough at the plate to upend the Burlington Bees on Friday night at Community Field with an 11-9 victory to even the series at a game apiece.
A third-inning rally for the Cougars (4-4) brought seven runs to the plate which turned a 1-1 tie into an 8-1 Cougars advantage. Alex Llanos reached on a throwing error by shortstop Sean Jamieson and took third on a base hit by Danny Mateo. Michael Antonio tripled home both men to put the Cougars on top while they never trailed again.
Jorge Bonifacio lifted a single to center, scoring Antonio. Orlando Calixte reached on an infield hit while Edul Escobar drew a free pass from Jose Macias (0-2) to load the bases for Tim Ferguson. Ferguson cranked a 3-1 fastball over the left-center field fence to clear the bags and put the Cougars up by seven.
Burlington (5-3) didn't go away as they grabbed four runs right back off Kellen Moen including a three-run homer in the fourth by John Nester. The Cougars seemed to put the game out of reach with two runs in the ninth inning to take an 11-5 lead, but the Bees churned out four runs while seven consecutive batters reached while two were out.
Nick Graffeo (S, 2) replaced Eric Cantrell and walked Dusty Robinson to load the bases. Bobby Crocker had a chance to at least tie the game with a base hit, but he fanned to end the contest. Jonathan Dooley (1-0) was solid for the Cougars in his four relief innings as he didn't allow a run.
The Cougars battle the Bees in the third of their four-game road series on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. You can listen to the broadcast on AM 1280 WBIG and www.kccougars.com, beginning at 6:15 p.m. Right-hander Brooks Pounders (0-0) starts against fellow righty Raul Alcantara (0-0). The Cougars return home on Thursday, April 19 to take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
