Dragons Rally in Ninth to Even Series

SOUTH BEND - The Dayton Dragons (3-5) erased a 4-3 ninth-inning deficit and rallied to defeat the Silver Hawks 6-4 in front of more than 1,500 fans at Coveleski Stadium. The Silver Hawks (4-4) scored three runs in the eighth inning to grab a one-run advantage heading into the ninth inning, but the Dragons answered with three runs of their own in the top of the ninth.

In the ninth inning, Juan Perez doubled down the left field line off D.J. Johnson to score Brandon Dailey and tie the game. Moments later, Perez scored on a wild pitch to give the Dragons the lead. Johnson (0-1) was hit with his first loss, after allowing three earned runs on three hits.

Bobby Stone tied the game at three in the eighth inning with a pinch-hit, two-out RBI double to centerfield, scoring Gerson Montilla and Roidany Aguila. Next up was Tom Belza, who tripled in Stone to give the Hawks their only lead of the game. Kyle McMyne (1-0) recorded the final out of the eighth and tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the win for Dayton.

Left-hander John Pedrotty started for the Hawks and got a no decision, allowing three earned runs on six hits over five innings. Southpaw Tanner Robles countered for the Dragons, surrendering just one earned run on three hits over six innings.

Matt Helm singled in the first inning and extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Belza finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.

Matt Sample tossed two scoreless innings out of the Hawks bullpen.

The Hawks and Dragons will play game three of the series tomorrow night at Coveleski Stadium.
