Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Bees fell just short of another impressive comeback and lost 11-9 to the Kane County Cougars. The Bees ninth inning comeback ended when Bobby Crocker struck out with the bases loaded.
The first inning looked good for right-handed starter, Jose Macias, but somehow the outing looked worse than Jonathan Joseph's start the night before. Macias gave up a run in the top of the second and heading into the top of the third, the score was tied at one run apiece.
The inning started with a throwing error by shortstop, Sean Jamieson and quickly unraveled into a mess of runs. Three straight hits followed the error and the score was 4-1 in the Cougars' favor. With the bases loaded and two outs, Macias served up a grand slam to Tim Ferguson. Macias actually struck out three batters in the inning, but surrendered seven runs. Macias pitched four innings and gave up 10 hits and eight runs (three earned). The Bees went down 8-1 heading into the bottom of the third.
Max Perlman started the fifth inning on the mound for the Bees and got two outs before giving up a run. In 3.1 innings pitched, the Cougars had two hits and one run.
In the bottom of the fourth, Bees catcher, John Nester crushed a deep three-run home run to left.
But the Bees could not maintain the four run deficit for long. The Bees committed an error with two outs in the top of the ninth and pitcher Ryan Doolittle gave up two runs. Trailing 11-5 in the bottom of the ninth, the Bees mounted a comeback with two outs.
Thursday night's hero, Wade Kirkland smacked a base hit and scored when Nester hit a double off the cen- terfield wall. Douglas Landaeta hit a two-run homerun. Royce Consigli hit for Chad Oberacker and lined a base hit to left, and later scored on B.A. Vollmuth's rope to left. But with the bases loaded and two outs, Bobby Crocker struck out swinging and the Bees took the 11-9 loss.
Raul Alcantara makes his second start for the Bees on Saturday night. For tickets to game three with Kane County visit www.gobees.com or call (319) 754-5705 during normal business hours.
