Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars trailed the Dayton Dragons 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday afternoon and scored seven runs in that frame to flip the deficit into a 7-3 lead and proceed for a 10-4 win in front of 10,080 fans at Elfstrom Stadium.
Ryan Ford gave up solo homers in the first and third and a tally in the fifth for the 3-0 score. The southpaw left in line for the loss but got the win due to the Cougars' eruption off Dragons starter Juan Frias. Cliff Pennington doubled in David Castillo, and Luis Perez smacked a three-run homer for a 4-3 lead. Reliever James Morrison entered and loaded the bases from a double and two walks. Pennington scored on a wild pitch, and Eddie Kim connected for a two-out, two-run double and a 7-3 Cougars lead.
J.R. Pickens gave up an unearned run in the sixth, but Kane County avenged that with one in their half for an 8-4 game heading to the eighth. Looking to cushion the lead, Javier Herrera belted a two-run home run to make it 10-4. Jared Trout worked a scoreless ninth to complete the contest.
Ford (11-6) gave up three runs on seven hits in his five innings. Pickens worked two innings while Tomas Cabaniel and Trout each pitched one inning. Frias (0-4) got the loss for Dayton. Since Burlington lost its game against Quad Cities, the Cougars finished Sunday one game out of the second postseason spot in the Western Division. Game three with Dayton (17-27) is Monday night at 7 CDT. Trent Peterson (1-2, 4.60) is scheduled to pitch for the Cougars (22-22) against right-hander Aaron Garrison (0-0, 9.00).
