South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks find themselves in the stretch run of the 2005 campaign with fewer than 30 games to play. This is the time of year when manager's, regardless of where their teams are or what they have accomplished, would like to be firing on all cylinders. Sunday at the Cove, the engine ran smoothly as the Hawks cruised past the Lansing Lugnuts 10-3.
Like Saturday night, the Silver Hawks jumped on the Lugnuts early. In the first inning, Emilio Bonifacio reached on a fielding error by second baseman Eugenio Velez. Alberto Gonzales' single up the middle advanced Bonifacio to third. Augie Murillo reached on a fielder's choice, but Bonifacio was thrown out at home in an attempt to score. Carlos Gonzales then walked loading the bases for Cesar Nicolas who singled through the hole at shortstop scoring Alberto Gonzales pushing the Hawks in front 1-0. The bases remained drunk when Wilkin Castillo then offered at the first pitch he saw and scored Murillo with a sacrifice fly to center making it 2-0 South Bend.
The Hawks put more runs on the board in the second. With one away, Brandon Simon singled to right and advanced to second on a balk by Lansing starter Po-Hsuan Keng. Emilio Bonifacio singled to left to bring Simon home making it 3-1, while moving to second on a fielding error by left fielder Brian Patrick. After Alberto Gonzales popped out, Augie Murillo singled to left to chase in Bonifacio and give South Bend a 4-1 lead. Carlos Gonzales followed with a base hit to right plating Murillo, who moved 90 feet on a passed ball by charged to catcher Josh Lex increasing the Hawks lead to 5-1.
The Hawks added single runs in the fifth and sixth and scored another pair in the eighth.
South Bend's Chris Kinsey (4-1) picked up the win while, Po-Hsuan Keng (2-5) suffered the loss.
The Silver Hawks (67-47) continue their four game series with the Lansing Lugnuts (56-57) Sunday. Monday's are Budweiser Dollar Monday, presented by ABC 57 and B-100, featuring $1.00 tickets, $1.00 hot dogs, and $1.00 Pepsi products. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM.
