Kane County overcomes three run deficit with seven run fifth inning on route to big win

Geneva, IL- Dayton Dragons (17-26, 47-66) starting pitcher Juan Frias (L, 0-4) turned 26 on Sunday and early on looked as if he was going to give himself a win for a present. The Kane County Cougars (22-22, 53-60) had other ideas and turned a 3-0 Dragons lead around with a seven run fifth inning on route to a 10-4 thumping of Dayton in front of 10,080 at Elfstrom Stadium.

Dayton shortstop Adam Rosales gave his Dragons teammates some extra fan support on Sunday. The Reds 12th round selection in the 2005 draft grew up in nearby Park Ridge, Illinois and had about 25 members of his family and friends to cheer him and the Dragons on. They had plenty to cheer about in the top half of the first inning as Rosales parked a Ryan Ford (W, 11-6) offering on a picnic table beyond the left field wall for his third homer of the season and a 1-0 lead.

The Dragons used the long ball again in the top of the fourth inning as another recent addition to the club went deep. Jordan Belcher's first hit in a Dayton was also a homer to left. The second solo shot of the afternoon gave the Miami Valley's team a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning the lead grew to 3-0. Jorge Mejia led off the inning with a bunt single, moved to second on a ground out and stole third. With two down, Rosales picked up his second RBI on the day with a single to left for a 3-0 Dayton lead.

Dragons starter Juan Frias (L, 0-4) was cruising along leading 3-0 heading into the fifth. The left hander had allowed only a single with one out in the fourth inning to Cougar DH Tommy Everidge. With one down and no one on base, Bradley Key dropped a pop fly that was hit in front of the plate for an E5. Key was one of four Dragons in the area and tried to make a last second effort to catch the ball as it dropped to the playing surface. Gregorio Petit drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Cliff Pennington picked up the first of his two RBI on the game and the Dayton advantage was cut to 3-1. Luis Perez launched a Frias offering deep and out in left center for a three run homer and a 4-3 KC lead. Kane County closed out the inning picking up four runs off James Morrison (ND) for a 7-3 lead.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning as Dayton scored on a Petit error to cut the lead to 7-4. The Cougars picked up a run on the second RBI of the afternoon from Pennington, as his single scored Petit who led off the inning with a triple. Kane County led 8-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth and picked up a pair of runs off Joe Wilson (ND) on a lead off walk and a two run home run by Luis Perez.

The Dragons and Kane County continue the four game series Monday night at Elfstrom Stadium with an 8:00 PM first pitch. RHP Aaron Garrison will make the start for the Dragons in the third game of the series, while the Cougars will send RHP Trent Peterson to the mound. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 7:30 PM.
