Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Wisconsin starting pitcher Julio Santiago allowed one run, four hits, and struck out eight over 7-1/3 innings and the Rattlers beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-2 Sunday afternoon. Mike Wilson homered and drove in three runs and Chris Colton hit another homer for the Rattlers.
Wisconsin (64-50 overall, 25-19 second half) got the early advantage with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Green doubled to rightcenter to drive in both runs for a 2-0 lead.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth. Wilson hit a towering fly ball down the left field line that nicked the foul pole for a fair ball and his sixteenth home run of the season. The home run, a two-run blast, gave Wisconsin a 4-0 lead and was Wilson's sixteenth of the season.
Santiago kept the Kernels (49-65, 19-25) off the board through seven innings. He came out for the eighth and got his eighth strikeout of the game for the first out. But, after a single by Chris Walston, Santiago left the game. Justin Jordan entered and gave up a double to Richard Giannotti. An RBI groundout by Alexis Casilla and an RBI double by Michael Collins pulled the Kernels to within 4-2.
Wisconsin got both those runs back in the bottom of the eighth. Colton lined his eighth homer of the season to left to start the inning. Colton has homered in three straight games. Later in the inning, Wilson doubled to chase Yung Chi Chen home with the run to make it 6-2 Wisconsin.
Jordan worked a 1-2-3 ninth and the Rattlers got the win.
Game three of the series is Monday night. Ivan Blanco (3-2, 6.40ERA) is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Francisco Cordova (3-4, 3.73ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm.
