Cougars to Commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with Pre-Game Ceremony Tomorrow Night
September 29, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Prince George Cougars News Release
PRINCE GEORGE BC - Tomorrow night at the CN Centre, the Prince George Cougars will be commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, to acknowledge the thousands of children who died while attending residential schools across Canada, Residential School Survivors, and their families.
The evening will begin with a pre-game ceremony that includes a video presentation documenting the Cougars' visit to the former site of the Lejac Residential School. All members of the organization were educated by residential school survivor, Elder Clifford Quaw of the Lheidli T'Enneh First Nation, and Chief Martin Louie of the Nadleh Whut'en First Nation. The visit to Lejac is an important component of the ongoing partnership between the Prince George Cougars the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, and the Nadleh Whut'en First Nation. "We thank both the Lheidli T'Enneh and Nadleh Whut'en First Nations for partnering with us and for helping our players, coaches and staff better understand the truth about residential schools so we can walk together on the path towards reconciliation. We have been honoured by their commitment to educating us to be better leaders in our community," said Director, Business Taylor Dakers.
The pre-game ceremony will also include a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the Residential Schools, and a ceremonial puck drop involving Elder Clifford Quaw and Chief Martin Louie.
The Cougars encourage all fans attending the game to wear orange shirts.
