Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - Alex Valdez went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, and Todd Johnson added a two-run shot as the Kane County Cougars knocked off the Burlington Bees, 9-5, Thursday night in front of 7,059 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Henry Rodriguez pitched five innings for the win and Derrick Gordon recorded his sixth save. The Cougars have won three in a row and 10 of their last 15.
Jermaine Mitchell's sacrifice fly and Gustavo Rosendo's run-scoring single in the first gave the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead against Ed Cegarra, and Johnson's two-run shot sailed out to right in second for a 4-0 count. After the Bees scored their only run off Rodriguez in the third, the Cougars erupted with a four-run fifth against the Burlington bullpen. Sean Doolittle posted a sacrifice fly, and Valdez smoked a three-run round-tripper to right-center for an 8-1 Cougars lead.
Rodriguez (5-6) gave up one run on three hits, walked three and fanned five in five innings for the win. Reliever John Herrera gave up a tally in the eighth and three in the ninth before Gordon entered to get the final out. The Cougars' final run arrived in the bottom of the eighth when Josh Horton drove in Valdez with a single. Cegarra (1-4) suffered the loss for the Bees.
The Cougars (18-20) now travel to Great Lakes for a four-game series with the Loons (12-26) that starts Friday night at 6:05 CT. Trevor Cahill (6-4) is scheduled to pitch against Steven Johnson (2-5).
