Great Lakes Loons News Release
Omar Poveda held the offense of the Great Lakes Loons in check Thursday night as they lost to the Clinton LumberKings in front of 4,337 fans by a score of 8-1.
The LumberKings jumped out to an early lead in the ballgame thanks to a Paul Coleman uncorked a first-inning wild pitch to score a run. Later in the frame, a two-run homer by first baseman Chad Tracy extended Clintons lead to 3-0. In the eighth, Loons reliever Blake Brannon came on in relief and would struggle with his control allowing five walks in only one-third of an inning that saw Clinton add on five runs to complete the scoring for Clinton.
Preston Mattingly added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give the Loons their only run of the ballgame.
Coleman (1-2) picked up his second loss of the season despite going seven strong innings allowing six hits and only the three runs he gave up in the opening frame. Miguel Ramirez worked 1.2 scoreless innings but did allow all three of his inherited runners to score in eighth.
Poveda (11-4) pitched brilliantly in picking up his eleventh win of the season. The right-hander pitched seven strong innings, holding the Loons offense to a single run and striking out seven. After the ballgame the LumberKings announced that Poveda had been promoted to High-A Bakersfield of the California League.
Ivan Izquierdo pitched the final two innings in mop-up duty to complete the ballgame.
The Loons welcome the Kane County Cougars to Dow Diamond for the first time in team history with a four-game series beginning Friday night. The Cougars are the only team in the Midwest League that has yet to play the Loons here in Mid-Michigan. Game time is 7:05pm. Steven Johnson is scheduled to get the start for the Loons.
