Cougars Stumble vs. Silver Hawks
May 3, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - For the first time this season, the Kane County Cougars have lost a series. They won their first six sets of the year for a new franchise record, but a 7-4 defeat Sunday afternoon against the Silver Hawks in front of 5,091 at Elfstrom Stadium has the Cougars looking to avoid a three-game series sweep Monday night. The Cougars led early, 1-0, but they made five errors over the course of the game and couldn't keep the South Bend offense at bay.
Â
Steve Kleen singled home Matt Ray in the bottom of the first against Trevor Harden (4-1), but the Cougars left the bases loaded, and Harden settled down to post a quality start.
Â
The Silver Hawks built a 6-2 lead in the middle innings, getting six runs -- three earned -- against Cougars starter Matt Fitts (0-4) in four-plus innings. After Matt Ray homered in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3, Mike Hart yielded a run in the sixth for a 7-3 score. Kenny Smalley logged 3 1/3 innings of two-hit shutout relief after Hart, but Dusty Coleman's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth was all the Cougars could muster beyond the fifth inning.
Â
The Cougars (15-8) and Silver Hawks (11-12) wrap up the three-game set Monday night at 6 CDT. Shawn Haviland (2-1, 2.35) will face off against Brett Moorhouse (0-2, 5.52).Â
