Dayton Dragons News Release

Fort Wayne, Ind.-Matt Clark's home run to center field with two outs in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie as the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The TinCaps, who have won all six meetings with Dayton this season, improved to 17-6 on the year. Dayton fell to 6-17.

Fort Wayne battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the fifth inning. They scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, one in the sixth, and one in the seventh for the win.

Dayton built the lead in the fourth and fifth innings. Byron Wiley doubled to right in the Dayton fourth, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

In the fifth, Carlos Mendez led off with a home run to left, his first with the Dragons, and Miguel Rojas connected on a two-out homer to left, also his first, to make it 3-0.

On the first pitch after Rojas' home run, Fort Wayne pitcher Simon Castro drilled Dave Sappelt in the back with a fastball and Castro was immediately ejected by home plate umpire Allen Alvarez. Fort Wayne manager Doug Dascenzo was also ejected for arguing the decision to eject Castro.

Fort Wayne started back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth against Dragons starter Josh Ravin to make it 3-2. Lance Janke relieved Ravin to start the sixth. Janke walked Jaff Decker to start the inning. Decker stole second and scored on Robert Lara's single to left to tie the game at 3-3.

Andrew Bowman came on to pitch the seventh and retired the first two batters of the inning before Clark hammered a home run to center field, his second of the year, to give Fort Wayne a 4-3 lead.

The Dragons' last nine batters of the game were retired in order by the Fort Wayne bullpen. Brad Brach, who has retired 30 of the 31 batters he has faced this season, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his league-leading seventh save.

The Dragons finished with five hits. Mendez had two hits including the homer to lead the way.

The Dragons meet Fort Wayne again Monday at 7:05 p.m. in the finale of the series and the wrap-up to the Dragons 10-game road trip. Curtis Partch (1-2, 7.27) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Rob Musgrave (1-1, 5.50). The Dragons next home game is Tuesday, May 5th against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Fifth Third Field.
