Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
May 3, 2009 - Darwin Perez and Adam Younger executed the perfect suicide squeeze play in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 2-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs in front of 2,416 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Younger led off the inning with a double down the right field line and was sacrificed to third by Anel De Los Santos. On the first pitch from Peoria reliever Chris Huseby (0-2) Perez laid down the bunt as Younger broke for home on the pitch to score the winning run.
The game was a scoreless pitcher's duel through nine innings as Peoria starter Chris Carpenter allowed just one hit and struck out eight over six innings and Kernel starter Manuel Flores allowed four hits and struck out four over nine innings.
The Kernels committed two errors in the top of the 10th inning to allow the Chiefs an unearned run. Peoria gave back that run on a two-out error and RBI single by Angel Castillo to score Matt Crawford and send the game to the eleventh inning.
Jeremy Thorne (1-1) picked up the win for the Kernels, giving up a hit and striking out one in an inning of relief. The Kernels improve to 12-11 in the MWL West as Peoria falls to 11-11.
The final game in this six game home stand is Monday, May 4th at 6:35 pm. It's Healthcare Professionals Night with the gates opening at 5:30 pm. Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com
