DAVENPORT, Iowa - Newcomer Mike Spina belted a pair of homers, Jeremy Barfield had two hits and two RBIs and Shawn Haviland posted his sixth win Sunday night as the Kane County Cougars rebounded from a 10-2 loss to beat the Quad Cities River Bandits, 8-2, splitting doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park. The clubs also split the four-game series, and the Cougars are off Monday before a four-game home set begins Tuesday night at Elfstrom Stadium against Peoria.

Barfield got the Cougars on the board right away in Game 2 when he singled home Dusty Coleman against Arquimedes Nieto (1-6). Then the Cougars broke open the game with a four-run third. Jason Christian nailed an RBI double, Barfield smacked a run-scoring triple and Spina collected his first hit as a Cougar with a two-run homer to make it 5-0. After the Bandits answered with their only two runs in the bottom of the fourth against Haviland, Spina connected for another two-run homer in the fifth. Dusty Napoleon's bases-loaded walk in the seventh accounted for the final run in the 8-2 contest.

Haviland (6-3) gave up two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings in the win. He walked one and struck out five. Trey Barham and Justin Murray handled the final 1 2/3 innings with scoreless relief.

In Game 1 the Cougars also scored first. Carlos Arrieche singled home Steve Parker in the third, but the River Bandits tallied four unearned runs in the third against Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (0-1), who made his Cougars debut. The right-hander lasted 3 2/3 innings and gave up four hits, walked two and struck out three. Matt Fitts yielded six runs in the sixth inning when Quad Cities pulled away for the 10-2 finish.

The Cougars (2-2, 43-31) and Peoria (1-3, 39-34) start their series Tuesday night at 6:30 CDT. Kenny Smalley (6-3, 2.26) will face Justin Bristow (3-3, 4.47).
