South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Fort Wayne TinCaps turned a close game into a rout Sunday, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 7-0 victory over South Bend and a four game series sweep. The TinCaps have taken 15 of 16 matchups this season, while South Bend now has a 3-21 record in the month of June.
South Bend starter Taylor Sinclair (LP, 2-3) was aided by his catcher Rossmel Perez in the early innings. Perez threw out Justin Baum trying to steal second twice (second and fifth innings) and also picked Robert Lara off of first with a snap throw from the plate in the third inning.
Fort Wayne starter Anthony Bass (WP, 7-3) didn't need much assistance early on, as he set down the first 15 batters he faced in the game. Alberto Diaz ended the perfection with a single to lead off the sixth, and moved to second when Bass balked. Isaias Asencio sacrificed him to third, but Victor Estevez grounded out and Reynaldo Navarro lined out to leave Diaz at third and preserve the scoreless tie.
The TinCaps broke through in the sixth inning, scoring seven times. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Blake Tekotte blooped a single to right for the 2-0 lead. After a fielder's choice for the first out, Daniel Robertson has a sacrifice fly making it 3-0. Sinclair walked the next batter, and then allowed a RBI single to Yefri Carvajal to make it 4-0.
Bryan Woodall (ND) replaced Sinclair and allowed an infield single to Cole Figueroa. Adam Zornes bounced one to third baseman Justin Parker, who made a diving stop but threw wildly to second allowing two more runs to score. Robert Lara capped the scoring with a RBI single to make it 7-0 TinCaps.
Fort Wayne sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring seven runs on six hits with one Silver Hawks error. The seven runs allowed are the most South Bend has allowed in an inning this season.
Bass improves to 4-0 against South Bend this season with the victory on Sunday. He went 7.0 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out six.
T.J. Hose (ND) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for South Bend, and Fort Wayne's Nick Schumacher (ND) struck out the side in the ninth to closer out the shutout.
After an off day Monday, the Silver Hawks return home to Coveleski Stadium on Tuesday for a four game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps, with fireworks following each of the four games. RHP Brett Moorhouse (2-8, 3.86 ERA) will make his first start of the second half for South Bend, while the Whitecaps send RHP Brandon Hamilton (3-2, 6.46 ERA) to the bump. First pitch is at 7:30 PM Eastern Time with pregame coverage beginning at 7:10 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
