Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT - The Everett Silvertips opened the scoring midway through the first period, but surrendered the next five goals to suffer a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Prince George Cougars Saturday night at XFINITY Arena. Following their first regulation home loss since December 12, the 'Tips remain two points ahead of Portland in the race for the U.S. Division title with nine games left in the regular season.
Former Cougar Jake Mykitiuk scored the lone goal for the Silvertips, with Logan Aasman picking up the assist for his first point since returning from a lengthy injury absence. The Silvertips failed to convert on five powerplay chances in the game however, while Prince George converted twice on four chances. The 'Tips played the game short three regular defenseman with Kevin Davis and Tristen Pfeifer out injured and Ben Betker serving a one-game suspension.
Everett opened the scoring ten minutes in as Logan Aasman sent a centering pass straight to the stick of a charging Jake Mykitiuk, who redirected the puck in to give the 'Tips a 1-0 lead. Minutes later on a Prince George powerplay, Chase Witala fired a shot from the top of the circle and over the shoulder of goaltender Austin Lotz to tie the game at one. The Silvertips had two powerplays in the remainder of the first, but couldn't find the back of the net to regain the lead.
The 'Tips spent considerable time in the Cougars zone to start the second, but it was Prince George who struck to take a 2-1 lead. Jansen Harkens created a turnover in the Silvertips' zone and fed Aaron Boyd, who scored to give the Cougars their first lead of the game. Prince George extended their lead late in the second when Zach Pochiro sniped a top-corner wrist shot over Lotz' blocker to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead into the final frame.
The Silvertips didn't make a comeback any easier after taking back-to-back penalties early in the third period. On the ensuing 5-on-3 man-advantage, former Silvertip Jari Erricson scored for the Cougars to put their team up 4-1 at the midway point of the frame. The 'Tips were awarded a late powerplay for a chance to chip away at the deficit, but Witala scored shorthanded to give Prince George a 5-1 victory.
Final shots were 29-28 for the Cougars. Everett goaltender Austin Lotz (24-15-1-3) stopped 24 of 29 shots faced in net, while Ty Edmonds (23-22-2-2) turned away 27 of 28 shots in net for Prince George.
The Silvertips return to action Tuesday night at 7:05 pm when they finish a three-game homestand with a showdown against the WHL-leading Kelowna Rockets. The game features 2-for-1 lower-level tickets and great food & drink specials as part of our year-long "Midweek Madness" promotion.
